Nothing like one of your babies being wounded to put e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g into perspective. Poor little puppy. He's on the mend and all is well. After a bout of mommy guilt, I am feeling better about everything else as well. (this shot is actually pre-injury...)Now onto something sunny...
Socks! I have new yarn on the needles (good gravy! those needles are tiny....) and a new book to teach me. I never thought I'd try my hand at knitting socks, but all of the sock yarn I see out there is just too tempting not to try. Plus I loooove wool socks.
Getting Started: Knitting Socks looks fabulous. Whatever gauge you come up with for your particular yarn and needles, just flip the page until you find the matching instructions. (that little curly thing on the needle is the start of my gauge swatch. Hmm, should I be knitting a gauge swatch in the round?) And look at those beautiful colors from Sunshine Yarns. Mmmmm...called "starburst" and "beach day". I'll take one of each, please.

So sorry to hear all this Betz. Sounds like knitting and hugs from your kids will set everything right soon :)
Aww poor baby. It's awful when your baby gets hurt. They are usually over it it minutes but mommies tend to re-feel the pain every time we look at the ow-ee. Hope this next week is better for you!
This scarf was featured on the Craft blog today and I immediately thought of you and your beautiful leaves/acorns from the fall. I can't remember whether or not you crochet.

Hope all is well now on the homefront! Nothing like a new day to start anew.
Sorry for all the ick!... and yes you should be doing your swatch in the round. Now for some possible good news.. how expensive are sweaters to ship?.. my local thrift is putting all of their sweaters for 99cents each pretty soon. ... I would never in a million years use as much sweaterage as could be bought here... would you like me to pull some for you?.. oh hell this might be pushy.. if so please forgive.. it's just that each time we go there and I pass by 99cent 100 % wool sweaters I think of you... of course you could come to Chattanooga..but i bet that blow the whole saving thing all to bits :)

Betz,
My youngest daughter stayed home from school today with a black-eye, a real shiner. Her brother tossed a boxed set of books in the air and she happened to be on the floor(?) and the corner of the box landed right below her eye. Her cheek and eye are so swollen and bruised, it is awful. My son felt terrible about it. I feel for you and your son. Hope he heals quickly.
I suffer from those copyright violations all of the time-it is a real problem, very frustrating.
As Tim Gunn would say, "Carry on!"
Glad everything is getting better. I do hate when kids get hurt. Yummy sock yarn! Looks like sherbert!
So sorry about your little guy and everything else! Mom's always wind up hurting more than the kids! Hope your week improves!
Aww, sorry for your stinky times... I've been in the same boat! Things always have a way of turning sunny-side-up though! I hope you are enjoying the yarn :)
So sorry for the little guy!
Forget about the socks, where oh where did you get that all out cute octopus bag???? Love that!
Hi Asnipofgoodness,
I made the octopus bag last July (check archives: http://blog.betzwhite.com/2007/07/bag-this.html)
by fusing plastci Target bags together. Glad you like it! Check out the post, I link to tutorials showing how to do it.
Betz
You're so brave to try socks. When we used to be homeschoolers, we learned that the pilgrims came off the Mayflower with specific assignments (so they would, hopefully, survive) and the four year olds were put in charge of knitting socks! Amazing!
Yes. Sock yarn is so tempting. I'm with ya there.
Oh, and by the way, thanks for the advice on felting. I have successfully felted about 10 thrift sweaters. Fun!
Yes, technically you should be doing your swatch in the round. But honestly I usually cheat and do it flat. So it's not the end of the world if you don't do it "right"!
Hi Betz--
New to your blog. Love your style and ideas! Sorry to hear about your little one...certainly does bring the important things back into focus, doesn't it? Hope all is settling down on both fronts.
Your book is beautiful...pat yourself on the back!
Ihe sock yarn is yummy. Someday I'll give it a try althought I did knit my husband a Christmas stocking from a kit a long time ago.
I just started playing with felting and yesterday walked into a little yarn shop and they had felt balls in big bags, and roving yarn (which I just used for hair on a Dotee doll on my post), and every other supply on my list from reading your WONDERFUL book.
Sorry about your little one's booboo, but that is one darling snowman next to the adorable boy.
Hugs to you,
Joni
I love the colours of those yarn. They are fantastic! I can't wait to see how the socks turn out!
I hope things get better for you and that your little guy heals up fast!
Sorry to hear about the wee fellow, hope he is on the mend.
You are going to love Dani's yarns, the colours she uses in her dyes are amazing - she is one of my favorites!!
A word or warning, you will become addicted to sock knitting and it may be an all consuming passion to collect and revere hand painted sock yarn - my stash has gone beyond that of a few skeins to an entire collection that fills basket after basket.
Remember........you have been warned!!!!
Sorry for the stressful few weeks. If it's any consolation, your book arrived on my doorstep this week and I LOVE it!!! Thanks so much for sharing those ADORABLE cupcakes with us! Have a great time with the socks -- they're addictive.
Aw, Betz, you've had a rough week. Here is hoping it gets better from here and the babe heals fast. Those things happen and give you stories for him tell when he's older.
I'm a sock knitting addict and absolutely swear by Ann Budd's book. You can make any sock, any size, any weight of yarn and just go wild. There's nothing like handmade socks. You just don't understand until you have 'em.
Keep that pretty, lil' chin up!
I love knitting socks! I learned how to knit just so I could make socks!:o) Supper easy once you get organized with the needles. Have you made gloves yet? Next best thing to socks in my opinion. Wasn't the snow beautiful last week (I have the same kind of shot on my blog!). I'm here in MD too and am crossing my fingers that today will bring more. Hope your little guy's lip is better. Nothing worse than mommy guilt. :o) Mary
This is such an adorable picture of your baby, so sorry to hear of the accident + bad spell...hope everything is sunnier over there.
I have just learned to knit socks using that same book. :-)
so sorry Betz, that sucks. I hope things have taken a turn for the calmer, happier this week. I was channeling you as I was making a project from my new "Warm Fuzzies" last night (thank you so much!!!). I will post about it in the next day or two. All the projects are so cute!
I, too, am learning to knit socks with this book. Tons of fun. And all the sock yarn out there is so delicious. I love Koigu hand-painted. Can;t wait to see yoour finished project.
Sarah
oh, thanks for the tip on the sock book! I don't knit, but my mom does and I asked her to make me some wool socks....... she did, but they took her a year, she said the pattern was horrible, and she'd never make them again. *pout*. Maybe if I give her this book I'll get another pair.....
