Last night the boys participated in a new ritual. Something like a rain dance, but this was to wish for a snow day. (Never mind that the weather channels were all predicting a horrible ice storm on it’s way…they needed assurance)
When the school bus doors opened Thursday afternoon, chatter of the “ritual” poured out of the bus along with every kid running home.
“Mom! We need to flush an ICE CUBE down the TOILET tonight!” says one kid. “That will make it snow!”
“Yeah! And then we’ll dance around it and sing a snow song!” said another.
“And don’t forget! We have to wear our jammies inside-out, too!” “Yay! And then they will cancel school tomorrow!”
Um…ok. Did it work? I’ll give you a hint. This morning there’s cocoa involved. And Tom and Jerry cartoons.
(yeah, he’s a TV-watching, cocoa drinking, inside-out jammie wearer…but look at that pinky extension! That kid has manners)
No school today. *sigh* There goes my productivity…not that I had any. I’ve been procrastinating and distracting myself all week. I’ve got a monumental deadline for book #2 and I’m just feeling completely stalled. Usually big deadlines send me in a nose-to-the-grindstone panic. I think I am worn out.
I think CHA gave me a little break and a little glory, which I so needed. Earlier this week I even managed to ship off 2 enormous boxes full of 26 projects to my editor, which is a huge hurdle passed. And now it’s back to the writing. I like the writing, and I like the project development part. It just takes me a little bit of time to change gears and find my groove.
Maybe I need a ritual too. Hmm, something that doesn’t involve flushing or wearing garments inside out.
This looks about right…and some snuggling with those pj boys.
Have a great weekend!
My son came home chock-full of rituals, too. (We’re in your next door neighbor state of DE.) He said that you also need to sleep without underwear, and to put a spoon under your pillow. Pretty funny the stuff that they come up with!!
my kids dream of snow days but have yet to see one. even though we have moved from southt exas to central arkansas it hasnt helped much. basically its just colder… much colder. and in my opinion cold with out snow just isnt worth it.
Lol, that is so funny! I’m glad their rituals worked.
I love the ritual flushing the ice cube down the toilet. That’s hilarious. Your little one is adorable with his pj’s all inside out. Totally cuddleable.
Hi Betz, i just received your book and I must say that I absolutely LOVE it…. I plan to get started as soon as my life is not as crazy !! (I have two kids under the age of 2) Keep up the good work. I love your blog!
Aw, Betz. I don’t know how you juggle it all.
You are an inspiration!
So much snow and ice this year. We have had 78″ of snow and due for another big snowstorm Sunday night.
Growing up and expecially when I was teaching… snow days were such fun. I’ll have to share the ice cube in the toliet ritual with my friend’s kids. She’ll love me for it.
Where does one buy a Marie Claire Ideas magazine?? I hunt our bookstores all of the time and NOTHING! Can you get a subscription??
Joni
Hi Yummers,
I got a subscription to Marie Claire Idees through Amazon. I don’t think you can find it locally unless you have an international publication type place nearby! I hope to post pics from it later next week!
Betz
Can’t wait for the next book! I haven’t had a chance to make anything from this one yet, but i love to look through it… and use it for a prop when photographing my bags. Hope the next one has a cute cover too! lol!
(smile) we had a snow day too! But my husband and I are both teachers so we are totally down with all the rituals:) The inside out pajama picture is just too sweet!
I love little boys and a good snow day!
Hey, Betz! If you still lived in WI your boys wouldn’t have to be doing all the rituals! We have another snow coming Monday, too. A record-breaking winter in Madison! When I was a teacher, I had my own rituals, too. heehee
I have just found your blog and I wanted to say hi.
Love the rituals from your boys…very sweet!!!
That is too cute! Yeah for snowdays.
Haha!! I love the pinky out! Well done teaching those manners mama.
Hi, just found your Blog courtesy of a link on ” Piecemakers” blog. Just where did you get that Spongebob tray from, my 3 year old would love one. Thanks Lisa x

If I’d come home from school talking of rituals I’d’ve been set to reading Bible passages while my mom arranged parent-teacher conferences to determine where I was getting such evil ideas.
I’m especially glad that their ritual worked…even if it did ruin some productivity on your end. ^_^;
lol! An ice cube down the toilet – my girls will love that one. They have snow day rituals too: PJ’s inside out, spoon under the pillow and their favorite: underwear in the freezer overnight!!
What a great ritual~Just discovered we are NEIGHBORS. I live in a very close proximity to you, love your work!
Flushing ice cubes down the toilet, dance around it and wear pjs inside out? kids have a wonderful imagination 🙂 I love the elegant pinky extension!
