Blog Years

Are blog years something like dog years? My blog is 3 years old...is that like a toddler or a 21 dog-year old dog? My 3 year blogiversary was May 1st. Sorry Dear Blog, I forgot. Maybe instead of thinking of the blog as a human or an animal, I should think of it as a relationship.

I suppose I should pause and reflect on the 378 posts and the 24 tutorials created during these 3 years. (24 tutorials people! Holy schmoly, go check them out in the sidebar for pete's sake.) But it's not about all that, it's about you guys. You are the blog! You are the ones I think of when I come here to share a photo, a project, a story. You are the ones that inspire me with your comments and kind words.

So, how 'bout a little show of appreciation, eh? In honor of the Big Three, I'm giving away a signed copy of my newest book, Sewing Green! To win, please comment on this post by midnight EST Wednesday 5/27/09. In your comment, tell me what kinds of things you enjoy seeing here on my blog. More of something? Less of something? Now's your chance to speak up! I will randomly select a winner. Flattery will get you no where, but no need to hold back. :) Please leave your email or a way for me to contact you if your name is chosen.

In the meantime, I've been doing a little housekeeping, like refreshing my blog header. What do you think? (Those sweet little nests are popping  up all over. I think they are just the ticket for teacher gifts this year!) Hopefully you will be seeing more refreshing changes around here soon. Aside from an upcoming blog and website redesign (thank you hubby) I am working on two new big exciting projects! Details coming soon...

(5/28/09: Comments now closed, thank you!)

How about some simple tutorials of items that are easy for you but may be a good starting point for some folks beginning? Nothing major, just some fun stuff...or ideas...you are so talented - would love to make something of your design and then show my friends and direct them to your site! Thanks for the opp to win a signed copy of the book! Exciting!!!

Congratulations on three years! And thank you for reminding me that felt is fun. I like your posts about your outdoor adventures with your kids. And anything about boy clothes. How about teacher gifts for men? Any ideas?

I agree with the comment above (way to be original, eh?) but seriously...I love your tutorials, I am just beginning sewing but I love to see what is possible with some experience. Thanks for the opportunity!!

Congratulations! I just think you're great and love your projects. I really like the pillowcase tutorials you're focusing on right now, but really I like anything that involves shopping at thrift stores and garage sales and repurposing. Keep up the great work and thank you for all that you do!!

I think my favourite things about your blog are the tutorials. They are sooooo nicely put together, easy to follow, and I actually WANT to do them. You're really very good at making them. Your recent use of the scrapblog templates makes them even prettier.

I also love how this is a personal blog for you where you talk about things going on in your life, your family, and your trials and tribulations in writing and preparing for your books. I like how I get to see your process, and I find it inspiring.

I happened to come here by chance one day long ago from Etsy, but I've been visiting regularly ever since.

Happy 3 years!
I found your blog sometime around December while trying to figure out what to do with the vintage linens I've been collecting. We have some of the same pillowcases! I made a few of mine into cute lil bags as Christmas gifts.
I love seeing how you use repurposed materials.
Your new header is sweet. Very nice.
Excited to hear about your upcoming projects!

Shalae said...

Congratulations! Your always an inspiration. I always love learning something new especially new things to sew or ways to repurpose since I'm trying hard to develop my sewing skills and trying to be more frugal! You always have such great ideas!

Betz - I know that tutorials are a lot of work, but I love them. Your ideas inspire me and that's what it's all about, isn't it? The pillowcase top is so cute. I've always promoted the fact that a bedsheet is the best fabric bargain out there.

The exciting thing about blogging as an artist is that you can get to know your followers, and they can get to know you too. I found myself in a bookstore one day and someone was looking at your book. I said, "Oh, I know Betz!" ....... well, not really, but you know what I'm talking about.

I'm happy for your success because you're very talented.

P.S. I'd be thrilled to win the book.

Grats on the three year anniversary! I think it is like dog years. It takes a lot of work to keep a blog, it doesn't just age by itself. :)

I would like to see more of the recycled projects out of other material than sweaters. I have tried a lot of your designs, but because wool sweaters are hard to come by (and very expensive) where I live, I usually use t-shirts. So I am interested in alternative medium.

Thanks for hosting the blog contest, and thanks for posing your crafty musings. They are great inspiration for the rest of us!

Hi there. I just found your blog recently (I think I read about it on the Lime & Violet Daily Chum), but so far I love it! I really enjoy the tutorials on making items that are reusable (like the sandwich wraps) or that recycle items you already have laying around the house (I can't wait to make a few of those pillowcase tank tops). Also, I'm new to sewing, so I love that your instructions are so easy to understand. Great stuff!

Happy Three Years! You and your blog make a wonderful pause from daily life for a whole lotta people!

I like (very much) that you take ordinary objects and turn them into extraordinary projects. Like old tired sweaters into cupcakes, plastic bags into useful totes, scraps into sweet pins and ornaments. You leave the world better in the process by recyling in ways that are attractive and clever to boot!

My only suggestion: can you post at least ten times a day????? Okay, maybe five. I'd settle for two though to allow for you to be mother and wife.

Your witty way with word brings me back every day (okay, several times a day) and I always want more! I love the pillowcase tutorials and am always looking for ways to reuse what I already have and make it something better or at least more useful!

Love the new header- I've made some bird nests myself, slightly modifying them and my sister even made cute little bird cake toppers (love birds!) for her wedding cake, inspired by the nests. Keep up the amazing work!

Peace in and peace out~

I enjoy the visuals of the blog. A nice photo of a new project always cheers me up. I also like seeing what's new in the shop or what new direction you might be going in.

I do also like the happy tone as well. I guess most of us don't read blogs to listen to someone complaint but I think it's a challenge to be happy in your words and still come off as real.

Thanks

Congrats on your three year Blogiversary! 3 years is more than many relationships weather so good for you!

Your witty way with words is what brings be back to your blog daily (okay, sometimes more than once a day...). I love the pillowcase tutorials and look forward to more ideas on how to reuse what we have and make it better- or at least more useful!

I love the new header- I have made many bird nests and my sister even made two little love birds to top her wedding cake (complete with a tux and veil) all inspired by the nests! Keep up the amazing inspirations!

Peace in and peace out,
Valerie

Happy 3 years! :) Since I just found your blog last week, and haven't been able to do a lot of "catching up". I would have to say the tutorial--like everyone else is saying! I used to be a DIY girl years ago and I somehow fell out of it and haven't done much since. Your blog reminds to try and tap into that side of my creativity again and I just bought some pretty fabric the other day to get me going. Thank you!! (lifewithcurls at gmail dot com)

Man O Man, would I love to win a copy of your book!! I saw it at the bookstore the other day and read as much as I could right there. Then I detoured to the thrift store to pick up some wool sweaters to felt! Your blog is beautiful and always an inspiration.

Who knew you could do so much with a pillowcase! The big number 3 eh! Well done. I know keeping up a blog is hard work and you deserve a medal but I can see that you really enjoy what you do and maybe one day I can do what I love full time. I love the tutorial...maybe some very basic "how To" ones for learners.
Here's to the next three :O)

I love all your posts! I'm from spain and I'm really like to see the ideas from people abroad because here in spain is difficult to find the materials and books that people of your country show us.
Most I like are the tutorials, and less I like is nothing!

Congratulations on 3 years and 2 books! I love the tutorials -- I've learned that needle felting isn't so scary after all (even if the needles are the tiniest bit scary).

How to choose? I love everything. I love that you are willing to share with us so unselfishly! If I had to pick a favorite, I would have to say it would have to be the lovely items you have made with the pillowcases. I also love the sandwich wrap. I am making these for my kids.

First of all, I am loving your blog (I'm a new reader), and I'm looking forward to reading your book whether I win it or not! As for subject matter, I do hope you'll tell us all about the Squam Art Workshops--I am jealous of everyone who can go! It's too far for me to travel from Central Texas.

And to the earlier commenter asking about teacher gifts for men: my hubby is a teacher (high school) and he loves to get food or coffee. Or gift cards for food or coffee. It is so true that the way to a man's heart is through his stomach! And teachers tend to drink a lot of coffee.

Thanks and hugs to all!

I love the way you take something unattractive (a faded pillowcase, a shrunken sweater...a plastic bag) and transform it into something gorgeous! Makes me want to look at things in a whole new way!!

I have really loved seeing the way you repurpose objects. I share a deep love of thrifting and looking in unusual places for things that might be turned into something completely different (I don't think I've ever bought linen that wasn't first a skirt or a dress, etc.

Thanks for the inspiration!

Congratulations! I LOVE your tutorials. I used info from when you embellished your wool skirt to applique scraps of thrifted sweaters onto zippered pouches this year for teacher gifts. I used thrifted sheets for the pouch linings. Thanks for all the inspiration!

Yay for giveaways. I LOVE this blog. You've totally inspired me with the use of materials and I get to blame you when my husband complains about all the wool sweaters that are overtaking a closet, dining room, and laundry room :)It's Betz's fault, I say.
My favorite is definitely the projects you make using felt. I also would love to know more about your creative process.

Congratulations on three years. What I love most about your blog is that it's real, by which I mean you do things we all feel we can have a go at; your tutorials are simple and straightforward yet create things that are just spectacular. I also love that you re-use so much, I love to re-use and change something from one thing into another. Thanks Betz.
