DIY branding

Way back in fashion design school I got the notion to experiment with a wood burning tool on leather. I thought, hey, if a hot iron can brand a cow, maybe I can add some cool detail to a plain piece of suede. Fast forward to my latest how-to article in Make magazine.

This time I fired up my ol' summer camp wood burning tool to make a one-of-a-kind bag out of this thrift store find. I love the idea of customizing leather and suede items. Think of it! Belts, cuffs, wallets, even shoes! Do it for the shoes, people.

For all the details, check out page 131 of issue #21 of Make, now on newsstands!

Thank you for inspiring my bored-out-of-his-gourd son with your gorgeous work! Twelve years old and home for days with a persistent stomach bug, my crafty guy and I ventured out to purchase a woodburning pen and some thick wooden dowels. Amazing wands grace the house today, with vines, stars, dashes and dots, and all manner of patterning. Thanks for saving our day!!
