six with sticks

Summer's winding down and school starts for my kids next week. The summer sped by, didn't it? I was just scrolling through my photos from the summer when I came across these taken during our vacation.

A lot of knitting happens when my family is together in NH, between my mom, my two sisters-in-law and myself. This year my six-year-old showed interest in learning. Yes! I taught him on the very same needles I learned to knit on when I was six. How's that for cool?

This little finger puppet slowly evolved out of that session. First he knit a rectangle that I then stitched into a tube. I added hair, face and arms under his direction, of course!

Later my son was on a quest for toothpicks.

"Honey, why do you need toothpicks?"

"I'm makin' my guy knit!"

(If you click on the photo you can see toothpick knitting needles with paper "knitting" skewered on the ends.)

This is so neat! My 7 yr old is very into crocheting this year. We're waiting for Gramma to come back in the country to teach him to knit.

What a wonderful post! I love the toothpick needles!

On another note, I saw your Warm Fuzzies book at B&N and I must say, it's lovely and very well designed. Nice work!

I love that your family knits together... I am basically the only knitter in my family... and worse yet... I am the worst knitting teacher ever... I think it is so wonderful that he learned on the same needles that you did... the cactus is so cute... and I love that he made it knit... fabulous...

how sweet! My little boy is 6 also, maybe he will want to learn soon...I am going to show him this post in the morning to inspire him. He will probably want to make a superhero, or a jedi:)

Very cute. I love teaching kids to knit, they learn it so quickly. I've been fortunate enough to go into my kids' classes the last 2 years and teach the kids to finger knit. They make all kinds of things and wear them and then when I see them months later they are dying to tell me about all their "knitting". And the boys get into it just as much as the girls. I. LOVE. IT.

What a clever boy (and Mom). I'm glad you also managed to capture the memory with photos. You'll have to include the knitting guy in a scrapbook some day. A real treasure!

Adorable!!! I love the way those little minds work - you never know what cool ideas they'll come up with! My oldest son learned to knit with his grandma and it was so precious to watch them together. :)

Well done him!

Both of my older boys can knit (although they don't do so much anymore). My daughter is just learning to crochet - she has been desperate to knit, but she is only just coming on to 5 and it's a little too much for her atm, but crochet she is managing well and she's so pleased!

Being able to knit is such a wonderful gift and his finger puppet is great :)

How cool!

Quick questions, I used to know basic knitting when I was little. If I wanted to get back into it, what are good needles to get to start with? There are so many varieties, does the size/type matter, etc.
